Welcome to my blog!
Hello to all taking a look at my blog. My name is Dev Aggarwal and I am a junior in high school who will be discussing interesting tidbits about Computational Linguistics in this blog as I further my understanding of the field. I will be going through books, articles, and videos related to the field and try my best to articulate what little understanding I have achieved of the topic.
Computational Linguistics is a branch of AI that you are probably familiar with. Some of the more well-known examples are Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. Aside from virtual assistants, Computational Linguistics is also used today for text-to-speech, speech-to-text, translation, corrective grammar programs, and even search engines!
Now then, on to a little more about me. Ever since I was a kid, I have always felt curious about two things, both being in the Computer Science field. The first was video games which I loved to play and always wondered about how exactly it was possible for so many users to coordinate in one user interface. That is, how can one user’s computer receive information about the coordinates and actions of other users in the server while the game is being played in real time. To this day, the answer eludes me because I have not explored the various aspects of video game programming in depth. The second was day-to-day virtual assistants like Siri, the existence of which seemed like such an impossible thing for the longest time. How is it possible for a program to respond appropriately to any question asked? I had many crazy theories about they worked back then. My main theory at the time which I also acknowledged as impossible was that every response was hard-coded based on every possible inquiry or question posed. Today, I know better although exact specifics still remain unknown to me and something which I wish to explore.
Now that all that’s said and done, go ahead and read a few posts of your interest. Feel free to correct any misunderstandings I may have or contribute to the discussion since I will not only be sharing what I did understand, but also what I didn’t which is of just as much, if not more, importance.
